Here&#8217;s a list of eccentricities and quirks you can give them to make them a little more unique.\u00a0 (Credit for thinking of some of them goes to friends in the Young Writers Workshop.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-newsletterglue-group\">\n<p>Go to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.writingforlife.net\/?p=199\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8 Quirks to Make Your Characters More Unique<\/a> to keep reading!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-newsletterglue-group\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fondness for feeling and\/or squeezing marshmallows.\u00a0 This is me.\u00a0 Don\u2019t they have the most fascinating texture ever?\u00a0 You should try it next time you&#8217;re at a campfire party.\u00a0 Or it could be something else, like ketchup packets.<\/li><li>Language.\u00a0 This has a lot of options: perhaps they tend to ramble on and on, or have pet words or phrases that they use all the time, like the Scooby-Doo gang\u2019s \u201cJeepers!\u201d or \u201cJinkies!\u201d\u00a0 Maybe they\u2019re incapable of not speaking sarcastically when under stress.<\/li><li>Random knowledge of random things.\u00a0 Is their room decorated solely with merch from an obscure fandom?\u00a0 Do they know every Jeopardy! question that Ken Jennings was ever asked?\u00a0 (Insider secret: I initially drafted this post the day after the G.O.A.T. contest.)\u00a0<\/li><li>Habit of poking nearby pencils into holes in objects (e.g. the ones in bookshelves).\u00a0 (I know someone who kind of does that.)<\/li><li>Inability to resist pushing buttons.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just mean the big, red ones that say \u201cdo not push,\u201d I mean any button, anywhere. They just really, really want to push them.<\/li><li>Sometimes they speak about themselves, or someone else who&#8217;s standing right in front of them, in the third person.\u00a0 Maybe when they\u2019re tired, or to be goofy, or for some unknown reason they just randomly do it.<\/li><li>They really love facepalming.\u00a0 It has to do more with my writing style \/ pet words than with a specific character, but my characters tend to do that.<\/li><li>On the opposite side, maybe they really dislike something you wouldn\u2019t expect them to, like whistling.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a million other possible quirks that aren\u2019t on here (although I\u2019m loosely planning to compile a much longer list as I think of more), but hopefully this is enough to get you started.\u00a0 If you think of more, don\u2019t be shy about posting them in the comments!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Want to make your characters more memorable, but aren&#8217;t sure how?
